Courtier and diplomat in the service of Queen Elizabeth I, regarded in confidential dispatches as a favoured companionof the Queen following the death of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Of probable Valaisan origin, he arrived in England via Strasbourg in 1560 and was granted letters of denization.
Held secretarial duties on behalf of Sir Francis Walsingham, and conducted sensitive correspondence with Reformed princes in the Helvetic states. Knighted in 1589, he maintained a quiet presence in court life until his death.
